Prenatal Childbirth Classes
One-Day Childbirth Class
This one-day program prepares couples for the birth of their first child and provides a concise, concentrated learning experience in one day. The class covers the labor process, including techniques such as breathing, relaxation, water therapy, imagery, and medication. Information about the effective use of medications and epidurals, pushing techniques, and an overview of caesarean sections will also be provided. Coaches will also learn how to be proactive in the labor process. Birth films and a tour of the Maternal/Child Health Unit are included.
Schedule: One Saturday or one Sunday a month from 8:45 am – 5:00 pm. The fee includes breakfast and lunch.
Maternity Unit Tour
Tours of the Maternity Unit, including the labor and delivery suites, are available Wednesdays at
7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Registration is not required, but it is recommended that couples call the Maternity Unit at 914.666.1030 one hour before the scheduled tour to confirm. Tours are occasionally postponed if the unit is busy. The Hospital can also arrange for a personalized tour if these times are not convenient. Please call 914.666.1215 to arrange for an individual tour.
Sibling Class and Tour
This class prepares children ages 2 and up for the arrival of a new brother or sister. It includes a video, a class on diaper changing, and a tour of the nursery. Please register early: 914.666.1292
Schedule: Tuesdays, twice a month from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Caring for Newborns
This class covers all aspects of newborn care including feeding patterns, common concerns of parents, physical assessment, and the role of the pediatrician during your baby’s stay in the hospital.
A pediatrician on staff at NWH will be available for a question and answer period.
Schedule: the class is offered one weekday evening in the following months: January, March, May, July, September, and November.
Preparing for Breastfeeding
This class includes a discussion on the benefits of breastfeeding and techniques to establish a successful breastfeeding experience. Participants will learn the physiology of lactation and the benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mother.
Schedule: the class is offered one weekday evening in the following months: February, April, June, August, October, and December. Partners are encouraged to attend.
The Breastfeeding Resource Center
The staff at NWH is committed to making your breastfeeding experience a successful one. There are several board-certified lactation consultants on staff, as well as highly trained nurses who will provide instruction and support with breastfeeding. In addition to the support you will receive while in the hospital, programs are available after discharge. The Resource Center also provides Medela breast pumps for sale or rental, along with other breastfeeding supplies. There is a dedicated telephone line, and one-on-one consultation can be arranged after discharge. For more information, please call 914.666.1370.
New Mom’s Support Group
New mothers are invited to come with their new babies to meet other new moms and share information about newborn care. The group meets once a month in the conference center from 1 pm to 3 pm. For more information about this free program, please call 914.666.1030.
